ITIL is Updating: ITIL 4 Foundation Now Addresses Evolving Best Practices

Feb. 04, 2019
Dan Stober

Just as modern IT environments have evolved over the past decade, so too must IT best practices. ITIL® Foundation is a staple in the industry, introducing a lifecycle to manage IT services and preparing professionals to get ITIL certified.

And now, it’s getting an upgrade.

On Feb. 28, 2019, ITIL 4 Foundation was officially launched. This update is the first since 2011, and addresses the new processes, vocabulary, and methods used in modern IT, including DevOps, Agile, and Lean IT development.

What will you learn?

Students who take ITIL 4 Foundation will learn the latest best practices in IT service management (ITSM), the new terminology that organizations are using within ITSM, and how DevOps, Agile, and Lean IT are affecting the ITSM domain.

The course will also tackle:

  • How ITIL can help an organization adopt and adapt service management.
  • The four dimensions of service management.
  • The activities of the service value chain and how they interconnect.

Classroom students will have the opportunity to take the ITIL 4 Foundation certification exam on the final day of class. Students in live, instructor-led virtual classes will receive a voucher to schedule their exam via proctor.

ITIL® Guarantee: Global Knowledge offers an ITIL exam pass guarantee for students who do not pass on the first attempt of the ITIL 4 Foundation exam. These students will be eligible to attend a complimentary Virtual Classroom Live session and will receive a new exam voucher to retake the exam.

Who should attend?

This course is for anyone seeking the ITIL Foundation certification, or for anyone interested in aligning IT with business, controlling or reducing IT costs, improving IT service quality, and balancing IT resources in the most effective manner.

All IT professionals should take this course, specifically:

  • IT managers

What does this mean about ITIL v3?

ITIL v3 is still relevant and continues to support organizations and individuals as they endeavor to improve IT operations. All ITIL certifications will remain valid.

To enable a simple transition to ITIL 4, Global Knowledge is offering an ITIL 4 Foundation Bridge course that is designed for ITIL v3 certified professionals. This one-day course explains the key differences between ITIL v3 and ITIL 4 and prepares the student to pass the ITIL 4 Foundation exam without taking the full ITIL 4 Foundation course.

How will it impact your job and career?

ITIL certification demonstrates that professionals are educated in ITSM best practices and understand how to integrate those practices at an organizational level in order to save time, reduce waste and avoid costly IT rework.

IT solutions aren’t cookie-cutter and neither are your business processes. Which is why ITIL is designed to be the calm in your storm. When things get turbulent, you can rely on ITIL as a proven, scalable and global best practice to grow and transform your business. Stay calm. With ITIL, you’ve got this.

IT professionals certified in ITIL are also typically paid well. ITIL v3 Foundation has consistently been one of the top-paying IT certifications over the past decade. ITIL v3 ranked 19th globally in salary in 2018 and ranked eighth in the U.S. in 2017.

As IT intersects more and more with the needs of the business, professionals with ITIL experience are more in-demand. An ITIL 4 Foundation certification proves your ability to align IT with business objectives, and sets you on a path to obtain more advanced ITIL certifications.
