New in VMware: NSX-T version 3.2
- Date: 21 April, 2022
The recent release of VMware’s NSX-T™ Data Center to version 3.2 brings new features and improvements from the previous 3.0 version. Before diving into the new version, understanding NSX foundational capabilities may help users appreciate this update.
The evolution of NSX
Developed by VMware, NSX is a technology that allows users to remotely control their VMware vSphere data center. This means networks can be centrally managed and automated. In fact, NSX technology can be seen as an additional virtualization layer for the network. While NSX is primarily used to secure the software defined data center, it’s more than just a security solution. With NSX, the network can be controlled by software. NSX also ensures underlying resources are controlled flexibly. This process can be automated to a great extent, allowing for more efficient use of resources, and considerable time and cost savings.
NSX, later renamed to NSX-V, is VMware's original software defined networking solution. This solution is built around its own vSphere products. NSX-V therefore requires a vSphere environment, such as vCenter Server and ESXi hosts.
For some time now, VMware has developed an NSX solution that goes far beyond its own environment called NSX-T. NSX-T is suitable for use in various virtualization and multi-hypervisor environments. For example, NSX-T supports network virtualization for Docker, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, among others, as well as native AWS workloads. NSX-T, unlike NSX-V, can also be implemented without a vCenter Server.
