Microsoft has recently announced two important new acquisitions – ADRM Software and CyberX – aimed at beefing up Azure’s data modelling and IoT security capabilities.

ADRM Software is a provider of large-scale industry data modelling, with its models used by companies as information blueprints.

The purchase of ADRM is intended to boost Azure’s data capabilities by combining the company’s models with Azure’s storage and compute in order to provide intelligent data lakes which can be used by multiple lines of business within an organisation.

ADRM has customers in 18 countries worldwide, with its data models used for things like enterprise data governance, data warehouse, data lakes, business intelligence and master data management. The models are utilised in a wide range of industries including communications and media, financial services, government, manufacturing, insurance and healthcare.

Ravi Krishnaswamy, Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Azure Global Industry, explained that “…an industry data model enables organisations to more holistically capture and define business concepts, refine and integrate processes, and build interoperability in their ecosystem”.

In addition to the technology, Microsoft will also be taking on-board the entire ADRM team and incorporating them into its Azure global engineering business.

CyberX makes a security platform for Internet of Things (IoT) and operational technology (OT) industrial systems and has been purchased by Microsoft as part of its strategy to expand the scope of its Azure IoT cloud-based security monitoring into existing industrial network devices.

CyberX allows customers to see their existing IoT assets so they can manage and better secure those devices. Its technology will allow users to see digital maps of thousands of devices across a factory floor or within a building, for example, so they can monitor their security state and connectivity.

Microsoft officials have confirmed that CyberX’ technology will provide a complement to other Azure IoT services, as well as products like Azure Sentinel, in a way that will help identify threats that may span converged IT and operational technology networks.

As with ADRM, the CyberX personnel are joining Microsoft and will continue to service the product. In addition, Microsoft has confirmed that it will “… continue working with CyberX’s strategic reseller and technology partners worldwide”. Furthermore, the CyberX platform will continue to be available in a hybrid model supporting both cloud-connected and air-gapped networks.
