Seven questions about the CPENT course and certification by EC-Council
- Date: 17 June, 2021
You can now get the Licensed Penetration Tester (Master) certification by EC-Council at Global Knowledge. To get this certification, you have to attend the renewed Certified Penetration Tester (CPENT) course. Learn more about this new certification and must-attend training course for any cyber security expert and future pentester in this article.
Why is the CPENT course interesting for you?
During the CPENT course you develop pentest skills that you can immediately test in live cyber ranges. By doing this, you immediately practise what you have just learned. These simulations are different from HacktheBox or Vulnhub, because you have to work with Firewalls, DMZs, WAF and other realistic network security measures you have to work around to crack a machine.
CPENT also contains IoT and OT security content - this diffrentiates CPENT from OSCP by Offensive Security. Learn how to write a detailed pentest report for example. This skill is vital to any potential pentester.
What’s in the CPENT training?
To obtain the new CPENT certification, you first follow the five-day Certified Penetration Tester training course. During this training, you’ll learn about pen-testing over a wide spectrum of network zones.
You pen-test IoT systems and OT systems, write your own exploits, and build your own tools. During this course, you are guided by a pentest expert.

You can also take the CPENT course at your own pace, as an e-Learning.
The CPENT e-Learning gives you access to on-demand content for a year and six months of access to the official EC-Council lab environment. You will also get a CPENT Live Range exam with the e-Learning. Learn more about the e-Learning via the button below.
Which exam do I take afterwards?
After you have completed the training, it’s time for the CPENT - Certified Penetration Testing Professional exam. The intensive exam takes a whopping 24 hours - divided into two hands-on exams of 12 hours each.
With a total duration of 24 hours, these exams are a true test of your perseverance, knowledge, and skills. With every new challenge in the exam, your knowledge and skills will be put to extreme test.
If you score 90% or more, you’ve earned yourself the LPT (Master) certificate. If not, with a score of at least 70%, you pass the exam and you’ve earned the CPENT certification.
How do you get the LPT (Master) certification?
If you score at least 90% on the intensive exam for Certified Penetration Tester (CPENT) certification, you earn the LPT (Master) certification.
Why should you take the CPENT exam and aim to achieve the LPT (Master) certification?
According to EC-Council, security professionals lack critical skills necessary for a successful career in penetration testing.
EC-Council states that although pen-testers often succeed in performing their tasks well in a "flat network", when faced with a segmented network, very few pen testers manage to do a good penetration test.
With CPENT and LPT (Master) certifications you demonstrate that you have in-depth knowledge of penetration testing. You’re not just limited to the basics, but you can handle complex situations.
According to EC-Council, after obtaining the LPT (Master) certification, you have developed an almost instinctive response to challenges in your field.
Who should get these certifications?
CPENT and LPT (Master) certifications are ideal for ethical hackers and security professionals working as pen-testers who want to further develop their skills and expand their knowledge.
In addition, network server administrators, firewall administrators, security testers, and system administrators can benefit from CPENT training and certifications.
Can you take the CPENT course at home?
You attend the CPENT training course in the Virtual Classroom of Global Knowledge. In the Virtual Classroom, you will receive classroom training from a professional trainer along with other students. You can follow the training at a location of your choice such as your home or your office. Learn more about Virtual Classroom on this page.
You can also take the EC-Council exam at a location convenient to you. Read more about the exam on this page.
