Global Knowledge—a Premier VMware Authorized Training Centre—has recently updated its VMware training curriculum following the introduction of the Horizon 8 V2006 virtualization platform and a number of version updates from the vendor. The industry leader in SDDC and digital workplaces recently announced a new version of the platform for secure delivery of virtual desktops and apps in the hybrid cloud. The platform is suitable for Microsoft Windows, Linux and macOS operating systems, and is the successor to Horizon 7.

Be aware: All versions prior to Horizon 7.13 won't be supported after March 2021, but VMware is lenient towards customers still working with Horizon 7 and has extended support for this version until October 2022. However, if you want this support, you do need a valid support agreement with VMware.

With the release of Horizon 8, you get new capabilities and deployment options to ensure that end users can work anytime, from anywhere, on any device. And that's not an unnecessary luxury today, as working from home as much as possible has become the norm since the global outbreak of COVID-19.

Make working from home easier with Horizon 8

In order to enable their employees to work remotely, many organizations have switched to desktop and application virtualization. This allows access to corporate apps and data from any device, while maintaining the highest level of security. This sounds simple, but it can be challenging to find the resources and capacity to quickly scale up when needed. With VMware Horizon, you get flexible deployment options in private and public clouds to extend secure access to corporate resources. Organizations are able to respond quickly; thousands of virtual desktops and apps can be deployed within days. Horizon simplifies the work for IT workers, reduces costs, and is also integrated with the VMware technology ecosystem.

The latest version of the virtualization platform offers several important new features and improvements:

  • Hybrid delivery, management & scale
Horizon supports hybrid and multi-cloud architectures that allow organizations to switch between public and private clouds such as VMware Cloud on AWS and Microsoft Azure. Now also available with support for Google Cloud and VMware Cloud on Dell EMC, as well as Azure VMware Solution (currently in preview). Improvements have been made to the Horizon Control Plane to simplify management. Other features include real-time performance monitoring and end-to-end security.
  • Modern platform for simplicity and speed
Horizon offers the ability to deliver location and time independent desktops within seconds, thus simplifying management. Updates can be performed without downtime. Instant Clone technology offers Horizon unique capabilities through integration with VMware vSphere and App Volumes. This reduces storage requirements and costs.
  • The best digital workplace experience
Improvements in the Blast Extreme protocol provide better support for high-quality video content. With a growing demand for collaboration tools to support remote workers, VMware Horizon offers enhanced capabilities for unified communications and collaboration. Optimization packs are available for Zoom and Webex - and now with enhanced audio and video experience and support for Microsoft Teams. For powerful graphics support, VMWare works with partners such as NVIDIA, Intel and AMD.
  • End-to-End security from a trusted partner
Virtualizing desktops and applications provides inherent security because data and apps reside in data centres and not at endpoints (such as PCs, laptops or mobile devices). Horizon takes this to the next level by taking advantage of the intrinsic security that’s built into the VMware infrastructure to further enhance security from the device, across the network, and into the data centre or cloud with integrations to Workspace ONE Access, VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud, NSX Advanced Load Balancer (Avi Networks) and Unified Access Gateway. VMware can help customers embrace a Zero Trust access security model for users, apps and devices.
