How do you use Freeze Panes? Discover this nifty Excel function in this article.

Working with a large spread sheet, it can be difficult sometimes to remember where you put certain information. Especially when you're scrolling through your data and certain fields disappear from your screen. But Excel wouldn't be Excel if it didn't have a user friendly solution for this issue.

To help you out, Excel came up with Freeze Panes. With this functionality you can freeze rows. No matter where you are in the document, the part of the row you froze will always be visible.

How does it work?

You start by opening a large dataset in Excel. After you've done this, you click View in the toolbar. From there on, click the Freeze Panes button. From the menu, choose the option that suits your situation. You can freeze the top row, your titles but also the first column. Hit the option that works for you and you're done - the part you wanted to freeze is now frozen.

If you want to undo this, just go back to View, Freeze Panes and click Unfreeze Panes.
