CCNP R&S Question of the Week: Private VLANs

By Johnny Bass
April 10, 2015

ccnpQoW05What should you complete first when configuring private VLANs?

A. Configure the private VLAN port parameters.
B. Configure and map the secondary VLAN to the primary VLAN.
C. Disable IGMP snooping.
D. Set the VTP mode to transparent.

Reveal Answer

Answer: D.

Not all Cisco switches support private VLANs. If the switch is running VTP version 1 or version 2, then the VTP mode must be set to transparent first before any private VLAN configuration will be accepted. This guarantees that VTP will not propagate information about the private VLANs to a switch that won’t understand them.
