With IBM Impact 2014 around the corner (next week!), I was excited to take a long look at the sessions being offered. Wow, what a great line up! This year’s event is at The Venetian in Las Vegas. Maybe that’s why I noticed that my list of sessions I want to attend has an international slant. Speakers from Turkey, Italy, China, Brazil, Scotland, Japan, and other nations are traveling to Nevada next week to share their insights on IBM products. Here are some highlights:
Brazil Lottery System – History & Use Case
I’m not a gambling man, but I’ve always been intrigued by lotteries. So this session on the Brazilian lottery got my attention. Caixa Economica Federal, the second largest public bank in Brazil, is the only bank authorized by the Brazilian government to operate on the lottery market. Gerson Cassel and Vinícius Florentino of Caixa Economica Federal will discuss Caixa’s SISPL, the software solution behind the Brazil lottery system that is composed of a network of 35,000 lottery branches that provide lottery services, while serving as a traditional bank channel. They’ll also detail how Caixa’s SISPL system, which runs on IBM WebSphere Application Server on z/OS, has a peak throughput of approximately 50 million business transactions per day and provides more than 40 different lottery and finance services. Caixa uses a Service Oriented Architecture to serve its lottery solution using an architecture based on IBM WebSphere Message Broker, IBM WebSphere MQ, and IBM WebSphere Portal in order to create new business opportunities on the Internet and in the mobile world.
This session begins at 4 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Delfino 4005 at The Venetian.
Highly Reliable Java Framework on IBM z/OS for the Central Bank in Japan
Junichiroh Hirose and Takahiro Kido of NTT DATA Corporation, a Japanese system integration company, will explain how this client’s packaged product, called FINALUNA rock-solid, was adopted by the new Bank of Japan Financial Network System, one of the most critical systems in Japan, having achieved zero downtime for the past 26 years. FINALUNA rock-solid includes predefined IBM WebSphere Message Broker flows and a Java framework running on IBM middleware, including IBM WebSphere MQ, IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS, and DB2 on a Sysplex system. They will describe how they designed a highly available solution that provides no message loss even when a system goes down and how it achieved extreme robustness with IBM.
Catch this session at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Palazzo J in The Venetian.
JX RCCB Provincial Bank in China Leverages Integrated IBM PureApplications Systems Solution
JX RCCB (Rural Credit Cooperative Bank), a provincial chain bank in China, wanted a centralized support center to integrate its back-end core banking, credit system, and card system business systems and to enhance its teller system. Enabling customer growth by 50%, the solution includes two IBM PureApplication Systems: one for high availability and one for development and testing. It also includes IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, as well as connectivity and integration software, including IBM WebSphere Message Broker, IBM WebSphere MQ, Enterprise Content Management, Business Process Management, and IBM WebSphere Operational Decision Management, to help build the applications.
Rice Chen of IBM’s Great China Group and JX RCCB CIO ZhiHong Hou lead the session scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Marcello 4405 at The Venetian.
Veneto Banca Mobile Banking Project
The Veneto Banca is an Italian cooperative bank headquartered in Montebelluna, Italy, and established in 1877. Veneto Banca CIO Mauro Frassetto will discuss how the bank undertook an initiative to improve mobile banking, aimed at supplying Veneto Banca customers with high-quality and innovative application from the customers’ point of view. IBM was awarded a contract that is probably the largest mobile banking one in the Internet of Things in Europe. In addition to working with IBM Global Services, Veneto Banca acquired several IBM software products, including IBM Websphere, IBM Worklight, and other tools.

Mobile Publish/Subscribe Projects at Garanti Bank Turkey with IBM WebSphere MQ & IBM MessageSight
Turkey’s second largest private bank is Garanti Bank, an integrated financial services group operating in every segment of the banking sector. Garanti’s 19,000 employees provide financial services to more than 12.2 million customers. Due to high customer demand for its mobile services, the bank had to implement a push notification infrastructure to send notifications from mainframe applications to mobile devices using IBM z/OS products, IBM WebSphere MQ, and MQ Telemetry Transport. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Delfino 4103 at The Venetian, Garanti Bank solution architects Ozer Ozdikis and Aysel Isbilen will detail the implementation that required a point-to-point, secure, guaranteed delivery mechanism where clients are identified by their unique identifications.
Practice of Whole Enterprise Architecture SOA Transformation in an Agile Way
I’m all about learning more about Agile, so I was very excited to read about this session featuring Long Cheng of CITIC Securities and Peng Cui of IBM China. They will discuss how CITIC, the largest investment bank in China, transformed its whole enterprise architecture to a Service Oriented Architecture that included integrating more than 100 systems and building an enterprise service platform and services. Using IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliances and the support of IBM consultants, the bank used an agile process to achieve its lofty goals in six months. After 16 iterations delivered and 40 systems connected, more than 100 services were delivered in the service platform. With this service platform, they built the first open finance platform in China. The team was awarded IBM’s 2013 Asia-Pacific Best Practice Award for the use of IBM WebSphere DataPower.
This session will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Marcello 4401 at The Venetian.
