Cisco has launched the brand new Next Level certifications. What do the changes in Cisco's program mean for you? Learn about the ins and outs of the new certifications in this series by Global Knowledge. In this article: Why do I get DevNet-certified (and more questions about the new DevNet-program).

Cisco has extended their program with DevNet-certifications. Before you learn what DevNet can mean to you and how you can use a DevNet-certification to accelerate your career, we give you more information about what the DevNet program is.

What is DevNet?

With the DevNet-program, Cisco helps you program applications with Cisco-products. DevNet contains the software-defined networking applications of Cisco but applications for security, cloud, data center and The Internet Of Thing are also part of DevNet.

Are you unfamiliar with DevNet and curious to find out what you can do with it? Cisco has collected trials and sandbox-environments for you to try out DevNet on this page.

Hey you, get certified!

The way to develop yourself into a DevNet-expert is by getting certified. And if you're quick, you'll even receive a special web-enabled badge. Cisco hands out these badges to the first 500 professionals to get DevNet-certified in their organization.

How do you get DevNet-certified? In this article, you'll learn the answer to that question and Global Knowledge will answer other questions about the new DevNet certification program.

Which DevNet certifications can I get?

You can get DevNet-certified on three levels: Associate, Professional and Specialist.
  • Associate
You need at least one year of experience developing and implementing applications on a Cisco platform before you can get your Associate certification. For this certification, you only need to pass one exam: the DevNet Associate exam (200-901 DEVASC).

Once you've got a DevNet Associate certification in the pocket, you prove you've got the basic knowledge of Cisco environments but also that you are able to work with Cisco's programming strategy and API's.

  • Specialist
If you've got three to five years experience developing applications, a DevNet specialist certification might be something for you. During this track, you learn how to develop safe and stable Cisco-applications. You develop these applications by using Cisco API's and other Cisco platforms. Finally, you learn how to administer applications and implement them in a Cisco-environment.

There are two tracks you can choose from: Software Specialist and Automation Specialist.

For the DevNet Software Specialist certification, you take one exam. There are four options you can choose from:
If you want to become a DevNet Automation Specialist, you also take one exam. These are the five exams you can choose from:
Passed your exam? Congratulations! You're a DevNet Software or Automation Specialist now.

  • Professional
The professional certification is meant for developers with three to five years experience developing and implementing applications. These applications run in a Cisco environment.

For this certification, you learn how to develop and design safe applications in a Cisco environment. You use Cisco platforms and API's to do so. You also learn how to administer applications and implement these applications on a Cisco infrastructure.

To get this certification, you have to pass two exams. First there is a core exam (DEVCOR 350-901). Afterwards, you pick one of the eight concentration exams. These are your options:
After you've passed your professional certification, you can decide to become a DevNet Expert. More information about this Expert certification will become available later this year.

What's the difference between these core and concentration exams?

A core exam is the exam to test your basic knowledge of the material. A concentration exam is meant for specializations. You need both to get DevNet certified.

Which training courses do I follow to get certified?

Global Knowledge recommends various training courses to get DevNet certified. For an Associate certification, you would follow the Developing Applications and Automating Workflows using Cisco Platforms (DEVASC) training course for example.

With this training course, you prepare yourself for the Associate exam in only five days. You implement basic network applications in a Cisco environment and automation flows in network, security, collaboration and computing infrastructure. Read a full description of this specific training course on this page.

How about the specialist and professional level?

For certifications on the Specialist and Professional level, you also attend a training course. An overview of these courses and the exams you need to pass these courses is available - you get to this overview by clicking on the button below. Figure out the right certification track for you by using the certification overviews you can find on the page. After you've decided which track suits your situation, you can use the course and exam codes to find the courses and exams you need to get your certification.
