Exploring Wireless Technologies and Networks

Get a comprehensive view of wireless networks.

GK# 3640

Course Overview

A good understanding of wireless networks and the concepts surrounding IP convergence are essential for anyone seeking proficiency in the communication industry. This course provides a conceptual understanding of the architecture, the leading technologies, and the operations of 2G/3G/4G wireless and converged IP networks. The course demystifies the terminology, concepts, and acronyms commonly used today in the wireless industry and helps new hires understand the dependencies and interactions with other parts of the network.

The course begins with a "Big Picture" of communications networks and then quickly focuses on 2G/3G wireless technologies, services, and operations. Participants will learn the functions of components like the HLR, MSC/VLR, BSC/RNC, BTS/Node B, PDSN/FA, Home Agent, AAA, BSSM/OMC, and the operational characteristics of services like SMS, MMS, CAMEL/WIN, VPN, e-mail, and others. The course continues with an exploration of VoIP and IMS technologies and their associated applications, as well as the popular ancillary wireless personal access and local area technologies: 802.15 WPANs, Bluetooth, and 802.11 WLANs. We discuss authentication and security mechanisms deployed in various networks.
