Course Overview


The ‘Introduction to Testing Techniques ‘workshop provides delegates with practical guidance on the application of test case design techniques (and measures of test coverage), and advice on the choice of which of these techniques and measures to use. The aim is to provide the delegate with a toolset of techniques from which they can then choose most effectively.

This one-day tutor-led workshop includes slides, exercises and practical work, and uses a hands-on approach based on group exercises and discussions. It is highly-interactive, allowing attendees to learn from the experience of the instructor and each other, and, owing to its interactive nature, each workshop is restricted to a maximum of 18 delegates.

Test case design requires the tester to move from an infinite number of possible tests to a tiny subset which can be managed in the all too finite time available on a real project. The secret is to select the most effective subset that will give you the most information about the system under test. This is the challenging, skilful, intellectually-demanding task of effective test case design. The same fundamental approaches for designing tests are used at all levels of software testing.

This workshop provides delegates with practical hands-on experience of applying the most popular test case design techniques to example problems, each of which is supported by model answers.

The techniques covered include the most popular black box and white box approaches, but each workshop will be tailored to the preferences of the audience on the day. All the techniques covered will conform to those defined in the new ISO/IEC/IEEE29119 Software Testing Standards and the BCS Software Component Testing Standard (a copy of this Standard will be given to all delegates).

Advice will also be provided on how to decide which of the techniques will be most effective for a given situation, based on both experience and the latest experimental results.

Target Audience


The workshop is principally aimed at practicing testers, actively involved in software testing, who want to improve the quality and effectiveness of the tests they (or their testers) design, and who want to ensure that they are fully aware of current best industry practices.

This includes people in roles such as system testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and software developers.

Course Objectives


Test techniques are fundamental to the test practitioner, and by the end of the day, delegates will:

  • Be familiar with the wide range of test cae design techniques available to them;
  • Be aware of the pros and cons of the most popular test case design techniques;
  • Have practical hands-on experience of applying both black box and white box test case design techniques;
  • Understand the factors that determine which techniques to choose for a given situation.

Course Content


Workshop Materials

Each delegate will be provide with their own workbook containing copies of all slides and supporting text, as well as solutions to all exercises. CDs containing soft copies of the delegate workbook, relevant white papers, articles and a copy of the BCS Software Component Testing Standard will also be provided for future reference.

Course Prerequisites


There are no formal entry requirements for this workshop, although prior experience of working on IT projects is certainly beneficial,
either as testers, or in a development or management role.

The workshop is intended as an introduction to best practices for those new to formal test design and as a refresher for more
experienced test professionals to the current state of industry thinking.
