PMP Question of the Week: Conflict in the Project Team

By Guest Authors
May 4, 2015

pmpweek05You’re a project manager in a strong matrix organization where a newly hired, entry-level network analyst has been assigned to your project team. At a recent organizational social function, a ranking executive (not a direct beneficiary of your project) casually informs the analyst that they exhibit great potential and will go far in the organization. This increases the analyst’s sense of self-importance and, consequently, the analyst no longer assumes they need to follow your directives. What would be your next step in resolving the conflict with this person?

A. Remind this person that the project charter has named you as the project manager which provides you with the authority to manage the project.
B. Ensure that no more work is assigned to this person, thereby removing the obstacle of further insubordination.
C. Start transfer proceedings to place this person on another project team.
D. Report this to your boss for upper-level resolution.

Reveal Answer

The correct answer is A.

The project charter, in addition to formally initiating the project, provides the project manager with the authority to apply resources to project activities. Answer choices B and C are ineffective to resolve the conflict immediately. Parties should first try to resolve conflicts themselves before escalating the conflict to an upper-level position, ruling out answer choice D.
