It often seems that there should be a natural progression within a company from a job role to a management position. Maybe the person getting promoted wanted to become the team leader, worked hard for the position, put in the long hours, and was finally rewarded for her hard work. But the question is did she learn how to be a good manager? If she had taken the time to invest in training would she have realized that a management role may not have been right for her?
A few years ago my manager left for another opportunity, and I considered applying for the position. Before I did, I decided to take a training course that opened my eyes to the large amounts of responsibilities and skills managers are required to have, especially when it comes to dealing with the different types of people on their teams. The course made me realize that management was not an area that was compatible with my expertise and talents.
There are many benefits to training of course, but whenever you consider going into a new position you need to understand what lies ahead. Management has a lot of responsibilities, and some of the skills management training introduces include:
- Tools, tips, and tricks to help with time management, reporting, and project management
- Learning to recognize personality types on your team and how to interact with them
- Learning different types of motivational techniques to make your team work harder and smarter
- Developing communication skills
- Developing coaching skills
- Conflict resolution
- Learning how to make your team feel like a team while building trust
- Time management
- Scheduling management
Management skills make all of the difference in team’s performance, job satisfaction, and so much more. It is a large responsibility that takes training and effort to learn just like any other job. Thanks to the training I received I recognize that I don’t have what it takes to fill these responsibilities, and until I am willing to change myself to adapt and put the effort into it, I won’t be anyone’s manager.
