What is TelePresence?

TelePresence uses video technology to recreate in-person communication. Unlike simpler webcam based technologies, TelePresence is a much richer, more interactive experience using state-of-the-art voice and video to give that “in person” feeling. It is available as part of a conference room set-up with a panel of wall-size panel monitors streaming images and voice to participants in a similar setting.  It’s available on mobile devices and through desk-top setups. TelePresence can integrate web, voice, and video so participants can share not only what is on their computers but also lifelike images of objects such as plants or equipment parts. In its ideal form, it removes enough barriers to make it seem like individuals are meeting in person.

Although it often goes by the term “enterprise videoconferencing” it is certainly not limited to large enterprises. Desktop set-ups connecting remote workers are available, as are products that can be used on a mobile tablet, allowing someone at a parts depot or furniture showroom to take a remote individual on a virtual tour.

TelePresence is an important tool in bridging generational work styles. Younger employees have grown up “skyping” each other and can be at a disadvantage with traditional phone-based conference calls.
