The cloud has dramatically changed the way IT professionals deal with making the IT infrastructure available. Instead of ordering a load of data center equipment, you are increasingly gaining direct access to all resources by simply typing in a credit card number.

The cloud has also changed the way application developers approach, participate in and develop projects, and how they implement, manage and discontinue these applications throughout their lifecycle. Furthermore, the cloud has significantly changed the relationship between the Developers side and the Operations side, heralding the DevOps era.

"According to Gartner, 80 percent of companies will close their traditional data centers by 2025.".

In the past ten years, providers such as AWS and Microsoft have scaled up their activities exponentially and disrupted the IT industry to the core. Many leading technologies and methodologies have evolved into an integral part of the cloud era by facilitating all these changes.

With a broad application of container platforms, infrastructure as code solutions, software-defined networking and storage, continuous integration/continuous delivery, not to mention Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, companies can now use the cloud to its full potential. This is in contrast to a traditional IT infrastructure. According to Gartner, 80 percent of businesses will close their traditional data centers by 2025. Instead, investments are being made in the cloud, as evidenced by the $57.2 billion spent on cloud IT infrastructure in 2018.
